When she woke up, the space beside her in the bed was cold. Claudia wasn’t there. Rémi gasped and jolted up in the bed, followed up from sleep by a nameless terror. Claudia had come with her into that room and now, all was lost, everything she’d built and cherished over the last two years was finished.

“I’m right here, darling.”

Claudia sat on the trunk at the end of the bed. Her eyes were bright on Rémi, ravenous, but she didn’t come closer, and she didn’t move away.

“You’ve rested. Are you ready?”

The galloping heartbeat slowly calmed in Rémi’s chest. Suddenly, she was fully alert, breath arrested. Waiting. “For what?”

“To show what you’ve been hiding from me.”

Rémi looked around, feeling her absolute nakedness, with the discarded toys Claudia had used on her scattered on the bed, the room she’d hidden from her lover, her partner, at last open to Claudia’s gaze and inspection, Rémi felt like she was hiding nothing.

She braced her arms, palms flat against the bed and leaned toward her lover, preparing to tell her just that. “I—” She stopped.

Claudia’s eyebrow rose. “Exactly.”

A fine tremor started inside Rémi. Fear. “But you don’t want that. I don’t need it.”

“As long as you think that, there will always be a specter of your potential infidelity looming over us.”

Claudia’s graceful body shifted on top of the wooden chest. Rémi remembered then that Claudia hadn’t been satisfied. The entire time Claudia had held her captive to her lust, she’d held herself back from coming. She hadn’t had her release.

Rémi blinked, trying to remember what they were talking about. Ah, yes. Her eventually wanting to fuck other women.

“I don’t want anyone but you,” she said.

“But you want to do things other than what we’ve done.” Claudia’s eyes pierced hers and she couldn’t look away, couldn’t deny.

“Yes.” The admission floated from her like mist.

“Then take me. Do to me what you want.”

“No, that’s not for you. That’s—”

“For the other women you’ll leave me for? No, I won’t have that. Until you touch me like you want, then there’s nothing to stop you from straying. You think it’s only a matter of time. I see it in your face. But I don’t agree. I only agree if you treat me like some doll that’s going to break if you play with me too roughly.” Claudia rose from the trunk, all grace and purpose. “We’ve done things. We’ve come so close.”

Memory of their nights, their days, trapped together in fierce passion, surfaced between them. The evening Rémi had attached clothespins to her breasts, made her cry out in pleasure at a party that should have been about work. The first and only time they’d gone to Odette’s, a sex club, when Rémi’s friend had taken Claudia as she watched and Claudia freed herself from the demons trapped in her head, the demons put there by her ex-husband. She was right. They had come close, but not close enough.

Rémi felt her body harden in preparation.

Claudia’s eyes settled on her face, cool, unyielding, then her gaze flickered down Rémi’s body, and the coolness left her.
